Hi kids! So this may be my last lab ranting post ever... so I hope it's a good one!! So yesterday I did my final experiment for the lab. And while I wasn't expecting great things to come from it, I still expected to get something. So everything was going along fine, the experiment was going well. And I get to the last step of staining my cells that I have been collecting and testing all day and I get to the final stain and I notice that there is some sort of oil layer or something floating in the final stain!!! I was just like... you've got to be kidding. Of course, when you're doing this, you can't stop and clean it out and keep going... you have to deal with what you've got. So I finish the experiment and of course that final stain (which is the most important one) is all screwed up. I ended up having all of this crap all over my cells... they didn't get stained properly... it was a mess. So two days worth of work down the drain. I just sat there going... did I do something wrong? Liz (the self-proclaimed queen of this experiment) had already stained cells earlier today and I never heard that anything went wrong, etc. So I go talk to her this morning and ask if she had problems... oh yes, she did. Same problem that I had... but she never felt the need to tell me!! Then I realize that apparently this problem has been going on for a while because she had already started making new solutions and testing different methods to see if that would fix the problem!! So apparently she has known for a while... yet once again, said NOTHING!!! Then I talk to Mitch and he says that he's had the same problem... but figured it was something he was doing wrong since he's new to the experiment. So yeah... an entire day's worth of work down the drain because no one tells anyone when there's a problem!! So annoying. So that's the first pet peeve. The next one is this... so I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is... I think it's the final stain that got contaminated with something and that's creating the mess that I see. So I'm just like... okay, fine... I'll just clean out the jar of stain and put fresh stain in and we should be fine. So thank God I had the foresight to check to make sure there was fresh stain before I dumped the crappy stuff (4 years in this lab has taught me to NEVER assume that there is a supply of anything). Yeah, I open the box and there's the bottle that holds the stain... and oh look... it's empty!!! Someone put a freaking empty bottle back into the box!! HELPFUL!!! And of course, no one told Liz that we were out. So we have nothing to replace it with. Seriously... why are people so stupid??? So now Liz is ordering a new kit and I'm going to attempt to filter the crappy stain that we have to clean it up a bit. But yeah... stupid people. So those are my lab pet peeves.
And on that note... I'm off to clean this stupid thing up... because if I don't do it, no one will. My last lab assignment... :) Oky doky pokies... I'm off... I'm sure I'll be back to ramble on about something else later today!!
